Awake:
The Body, Disability & Mental Health during/post COVID-19

"Awake: The body, disability, and mental health during/post COVID-19," explores the complexities of our collective human experience during one of the most challenging periods in recent history. As you explore this project, you'll delve into a world where art documents resilience, offering solace and understanding in the face of adversity.

My journey with this project began amidst the chaos and uncertainty of the pandemic's early days. Struggling through a life altering health crisis and grappling with the shadows of my own mind, I found myself navigating a labyrinth of emotions. Ideas burst forward like fireworks, seemingly dazzling, but often fleeting and difficult to grasp. The highs are exhilarating and the lows are excruciating. Yet, within this inner turmoil, I rediscovered a long-forgotten passion for art. Exploring various mediums and techniques, I uncovered the therapeutic power of creativity.

In the fluidity of liquid art techniques and the diversity of mixed mediums, I also found a language to express the intricacies of human experience. Each pour, each stroke of paint, became a thread weaving together stories of struggle and triumph, despair and hope. As I immersed myself in the process, I couldn't ignore the struggles faced by those around me – frontline healthcare workers, cancer patients, peoples experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic abuse, and the profound isolation felt by seniors and youth alike. Thus, "Awake" was born – a series of paintings that serve as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Through layers of vibrant color and reflective surfaces, each piece captures a fragment of the collective journey we've undertaken.

The fictional stories of each individual depicted provide context to the painting as well as a visual history. The paintings craft a narrative that highlights strength in vulnerability and beauty amidst chaos.

Supported by a project grant from the Ontario Arts Council and the Government of Ontario under the Deaf and Disability Arts program, this project has grown beyond the confines of my studio walls. Through exhibitions, "Awake" has become a platform for dialogue and reflection. It is a reminder that, even in our darkest moments, art has the power to illuminate the path forward.

As you explore these paintings, I invite you to immerse yourself in the stories they hold. May they serve as a source of inspiration, empathy, and, above all, hope. For in the act of bearing witness to our shared experiences, we find the strength to rise, to heal, and to embrace the dawn of a new day.

My first solo exhibition of "Awake" debuted in August 2023 at Show Gallery in Toronto, Ontario. My second solo exhibition ran in March 2024 at the Toronto Public Library's Mimico Centennial Branch.
